Every January, members of the global music industry meet in Cannes to do deals, network, learn about the sector’s future, and discover new talent. The conference, called MIDEM (Marché international de l'édition musicale), attracts nearly 10,000 delegates from almost 100 countries, from the recording, publishing, live, digital and mobile sectors. A number of articles came out recently discussing the conference, along with one of its key topics: the ongoing controversy (and potential solutions) in regards to illegal music downloading and copyright infringement. Each article had a differing opinion on the subject, and by looking at them side-by-side, a complete picture will emerge not only about the issue at hand, but about the various ways there are to approach it. Furthermore, a background on piracy, along with the aid of relevant theories, will provide the appropriate contextual framework for this pressing and important topic.Before the invention of blank tape, it was nearly impossible to copy a record. And even then, copying a record was difficult, involving a reel-to-reel machine hooked up to a phonograph receiver and pre-amplifier (Wicknick, 2007). With the advent of cassette tape, people began dubbing vinyl-to-cassette and cassette-to-cassette, but these were more for personal reasons than for profit; dubbing was mostly kids at home who made mix tapes to give to their girlfriends, “party mixes” and the like (ibid). When CDs appeared in Europe and Japan in 1982 and in the United States in 1983, they, like vinyl, were read-only, and so there was no way to burn to a CD (ibid). But because of technological advances over the past twenty years, mp3s and sources like iTunes offer near perfect quality of recorded music for a fraction of the cost. And consumers can burn the CD or mix right from their desktops.
